Letterkenny's Shop LK voucher scheme is set to bring a big boost to the town this Christmas as demand for vouchers has risen sharply.
Donegal Daily reports that demand for voucher cards for the popular scheme are up a hefty 50% on this time last year.
As of last night, shoppers have bought more than €523,000 worth of the voucher cards compared to €349,000 on the same date last year.
More than 160 businesses from restaurants to clothing and gift stores around the Cathedral Town take part in the scheme which sees shoppers buy credit-card like vouchers to exchange for goods.
CEO of Letterkenny Chamber, Toni Forrester, said they are rushed off their feet this week with shoppers looking to buy the vouchers.
“There has been a huge demand for the vouchers and we’re confident it is a sign that the Christmas spend will be up for traders in the town.
“We still half up to three days left of shopping and we’re anticipating even more demand for the vouchers in this time.
“The staff at the chamber have been rushed off their feet but it is great to see the demand for the vouchers and for the many businesses around the town which take part in the Shop LK scheme,” she said.
John Bowe, Chamber President said “We have seen the sales of vouchers increase each year from very humble beginnings and even through the downturn ShopLK voucher sales increased against all the odds.
“The cards went live on 25th November 2015 and we haven’t looked back. We knew we were having a good year but this increase has really endorsed our decision to move to the card.”
The voucher cards can be purchased up until 2pm on Christmas Eve at the Letterkenny Chamber offices which is located at the Grand Central complex opposite the Marks and Spencer store in the town.
