Actress Meryl Streep used her award acceptance to speak out against Donald Trump, but has now faced heavy criticism from the President Elect.
Meryl Streep was the picture of grace when she accepted her honorary award at last night’s Golden Globe Awards in California last night. Despite having lost her voice, her words were heard loud and clear around the world as she turned her acceptance speech into a comment against President Elect Donald Trump.
The Cecil B DeMille Award is a prestigious award for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. In her acceptance speech, Meryl recognised the diverse backgrounds of other nominees, including Ruga Negga who was raised in Limerick.

“There was one performance this year that stunned me,” she said, referring to the incident where Trump mocked a disabled reporter at a rally in 2015.
It was Donald Trump’s reaction today that has shocked and frightened the world. In his preferred method of communication, Trump lashed out against Meryl on Twitter, calling her a”Hillary flunky who lost big.”

“groveling” when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!

Meryl’s words at the Golden Globes were perfectly illustrated by Trump’s response after her speech.
“Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose,” she said.
She called on the Hollywood foreign press to support the Committee to Protect Journalists, “Because we’re going to need them going forward and they’ll need us to safeguard the truth.” Trump’s reaction backed up this comment too when he admonished the media for reporting on his imitation of the disabled man – “Just more very dishonest media!,” Trump tweeted.
Meryl also paid a touching tribute to the late Carrie Fisher, taking inspiration from her words to inspire the audience. Meryl quoted “Take your broken heart, make it into art.”
