A Donegal man recently proposed to his love by inscribing the proposal on one of Donegal’s most romantic locations - Ballymastocker Beach.

Roxane Keeney and Kirk Mullen

Roxane Keeney and Kirk Mullen got engaged last Christmas after Kirk planned a large-scale proposal from the famous Knockalla drive.

They had been an item for 10 years and have a son together. Their baby Milo, who is one and a half, was there for the special moment.

“I think both of our families had given up hope that Kirk would ever propose!,” Roxane said.

On Christmas morning, Kirk enlisted the help of a good friend to write a huge ‘Roxane, will you marry me?’ message across the sand. He even did a practice run before the big day to make sure the proposal wouldn’t get washed away or not be seen!

The day arrived and Kirk was adamant that he and his family had to take the dog out for a walk. Roxane admitted she thought was a bit strange.

“We were all packed into the car at 9am on the morning of, dog and baby in the back, and it was really wet and windy, but I kept quiet.

“He kept driving towards Portsalon and then stopped at the first look out to Knockalla. He jumped out of the car and motioned me to follow, and I saw the writing on the beach first, then he was down on one knee and produced a beautiful ring,” Roxane said.

As if that wasn’t romantic enough, Kirk had hidden a bottle of champagne and two glasses behind a wall and brought them out to celebrate.

“It was all very surreal and romantic. I couldn’t believe it was happening!,” Roxane said.

It’s no wonder Kirk chose this location to get down on one knee. The beautiful Portsalon Beach has been listed as one of Ireland’s Top 10 most romantic places, earning fifth place on the list of best places to fall in love
