Home appliance company Whirlpool have issued an urgent safety warning over five brands of tumble dryers.
A major fire risk has been identified in two types of tumble dryers manufactured between April 2004 and September 2015. Owners of the appliances are being warned to unplug their dryers and do not use it until necessary modifications have taken place.
Millions of owners of Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda, Swan and Proline tumble dryers have been affected by the warning. Whirlpool have stated that there is a potential concern of excess fluff coming into contact with the heating element and presenting a risk of fire.
Condenser and vented dryers made by the Indesit Company from 2004-2015 are affected and an action plan has been rolled out to remedy the faults.
Whirlpool models are not affected by this risk, the company have said. It was only after the company took over the Hotpoint/Indesit brands that the safety issue was escalated.
The warning notice from Hotpoint said that affected customers will get a free visit from an engineer to modify the appliances and update the safety and quality standards. The service call will take approximately one hour.
“The improvements we believe are necessary will further enhance the safety and quality of your dryer,” the notice said.
Customers can use this model checker and if they find the have a certain make that is at risk, then they are advised to cease use immediately and contact the company for repairs.
