Donegal Rose Amy Callaghan shares how she combines boho-chic prints with edgy rocker pieces to fashion her own eclectic style.
Amy Callaghan represents Donegal in this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival, and ahead of the live final she has given Donegal Woman an insight into her wardrobe!
Amy is only of the lucky 32 to make it to the final out of the 64 that began the competition.
The 22-year-old Letterkenny woman will now be interviewed by Daithi O Se at the live final!
To watch the competition, tune into RTE One from 8-11pm on Monday and Tuesday (August 21st and 22nd).
This is Amy Callaghan’s Style Study for Donegal Woman:
1. How would you describe your personal style?
Honestly, I’m not even sure. I could be in a boho, off the shoulder festival dress with a head wrap one day, to wearing a baggy band t-shirt with a black pencil skirt and choker the next! But I’m a dancer so I’m in yoga pants and sports tops 90% of the time.
2. Who is your style icon?
I don’t really have one? I like to make my own choices when it comes to choosing what I wear but I quite like Cara Delavigne’s style, it’s very grungy and cool.
3. What is your favourite piece of clothing?
My oversized Led Zeppelin tee, but my black Chelsea boots deserve an honourable mention.
4. What inspires you when choosing an outfit?
The mood I’m in… and the weather. This is Ireland so a coat or some sort of hooded item of clothing goes a long way.
5. How would you accessorise a look?
Bags, shoes and jewellery. You can always dress up an outfit with the right shoes and jewellery in my opinion.
6. What is your most recent fashion purchase?
A yellow floral wrap dress for a day event in the Rose of Tralee festival!
7. Where do you usually shop for clothing?
Usually online on ASOS or Misguided. But if I was shopping in town, I’d choose Primark and H&M. I prefer spending my money on shoes and accessories.
8. Do you have any favourite local fashion boutiques?
It depends what occasion it is you’re getting dressed up for. If it’s a formal occasion, Tokyo Boutique on the main street is my go too.
9. What are your wardrobe staples?
A good pair of skinny jeans, black boots and a neutral coat.
10. Do you follow trends?
I don’t like to think I do. If there is any trend I admit I love, it’s the choker trend. I have a collection of different types of chokers and mood stone necklaces.
11. Heels or flats?
Again, it depends. I’m quite tall so I love my flats but heels can change an outfit in an instant.
12. Shoes or handbags?
Shoes. You can never have too many shoes!
13. What is the best piece of fashion advice you’ve ever heard?
Be yourself, because an original is worth way more than a copy.
14. What do you think about the fashion scene in Donegal?
Nowadays, with access to online shopping and younger generations being more exposed to fashion trends on social media platforms, the fashion scene here has become very versatile and unique.
15. What has been your best investment piece?
An Osprey bag and Versace sunglasses… Sometimes it’s good to spend a little extra on good quality products.
16. What’s the wackiest item you own?
A pair of black and white striped jeans… I wore them once and got referred to as Beetlejuice….
17. If you could wear only one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Probably my dance gear? It’s not easy aerial dancing in a dress or skinny jeans! … or my pyjamas and slippers. Comfort is very important to me.
18. If money wasn’t a factor, what would you buy?
If money wasn’t a factor I’d buy my own design company and design my own range of clothing. That way I know I’d be wearing something that’s 100% my own style.
