Here's how stepping out of your comfort zone could be the best way to begin your fitness journey:
Joining a gym can be a daunting experience.
The thought of it can put most people off before they even get the courage up to pay it a visit.
The number of thoughts and different scenarios that can run through your mind can be overwhelming.
- Will everyone will be looking at you?
- Will you stand out?
- Will you be fit enough?
- Will you know what you are doing?
While these fears might seem valid, I can guarantee you that you are over thinking things.
Everyone who has stepped foot into a new gym or a new fitness class or club has had these same fears and thoughts.
It is part of our nature to try and keep out of situations that can make us uncomfortable and edgy.
But, as the saying goes:
‘All good things lay outside of your comfort zone’
Here is the thing about gyms, and I’m taking from over 20 years of experience of training in gyms all over the world.
When you are there, everyone is in their own bubble of what they are doing and are either working too hard to notice you or are too busy taking selfies to care.
- No one will be looking at you
- You won’t stand out
- You will get fitter
- The instructors will help you out
The only people who will notice that you are new and might be in need of some instruction are the people whose job it is to do that.
Your coach or gym instructor is there to guide you on the right path.
They are there to show you the correct technique, to make you feel welcome, to ensure that you are progressing towards your goals.
While this might seem like too much at the beginning, trust me, this is where you will benefit the most from this type of instruction and encouragement.
Walking into a gym and keeping to yourself and just going through the motions is great, it’s a great place to start with.
But!
If you continue with this, you will plateau and once you stop seeing progress, your motivation will wain and you will probably stop going.
Instead of doing this, try and make the most out of your first few weeks in your gym.
We have helped 100s of people who came to us with the very same thoughts.
They are now part of our gym family and there is nothing they can’t do.
Honestly, we have taken people from zero exercise to climbing Errigal, doing Mud runs and even running 5 and 10ks.
This is what taking part can do for you.
Don’t let your thoughts hold you back.
Dip your toe in the water and go find your gym family.
You will be glad that you did.
