Woman's Words writer Sharon Thompson shares a glimpse at the critics' response to 'The Abandoned' and all the details of her local book signings.
It’s not long now until my novel The Abandoned launches into the world, so I thought I’d pop up a few details of where people can link in with me and get my book.
Last Sunday, The Abandoned hit #10 on the Amazon Irish crime best-seller charts and this was from pre-orders alone, so thank you to Donegal Woman readers and all the support I’m receiving from everyone. It’s really lovely to be doing well at this stage.
Advance copies were sent out and the reviews are coming in and have totally blown me away. Here are some quotes from authors who kindly read the book ahead of time and went to the bother of giving me their feedback.
Adele O’Neil, Irish crime writer – “The Abandoned is a taut, authentic crime story that’s set in the streets of 1950’s Dublin. Sharon Thompson tells the grim story of criminal gangs and back street abortionists in a way that is dark, disturbing and heart – hammering at times. Peggy Bowden, the unapologetic, unsentimental, ‘No Punches Pulled’ central character is original and transfixing and will stay with you for days after the final page. The Abandoned is a fantastically gritty and really memorable story. Wow, what a debut!”
Alana Kirk, Memoir author and Irish Times columnist – “This book is explosive. Characters leap off the page and smack you in the face. Tough people living tough lives and Sharon pulls no punches (and neither does Peggy, her main character!). This is a visceral, vivid and visual novel, that leaves the reader winded at times…. With a storyline that constantly flips and turns, this book will keep you breathless until the end.”
Sheila Forsey, Author – “Peggy draws us deeply into her world and her mind. She will stay with you long after you read the final page. Sharon Thompson writes with superb descriptive prose and imagery. The underworld of Dublin in the fifties is brought to life in this riveting, shocking and at times heartbreaking novel. Sharon has firmly taken her place as a superb new voice in Irish Crime Fiction writing.”
Bernadette Maycock Book blogger and reviewer. “Blown away doesn’t even touch it.”
“Confident and fearless, Sharon Thompson is a new voice in Irish Crime Fiction to watch out for.” – Carmel Harrington, HarperCollins Author.
