Chris Cannon talks to Liqud Therapy founder Tom Losey about the foundation that gives opportunities to children with autism and additional needs.
Hundreds of families are preparing to climb Errigal mountain this Sunday in support of a unique and much-loved resource for Donegal families.
Liquid Therapy in Bundoran is a not-for-profit organisation that attempts to help children with special needs surf, play and have fun in the water.
The company also intends to make children who may not be as successful in other sports the opportunity to find their own niche.
In the lead up to the event, founder Tom Losey tells Donegal Daily about his aims to help give children a better opportunity in the water as well as allowing them to boost their confidence.
“I could see that an opportunity was being missed, I was a swimming teacher and I could see that there was a space to start something like this to help others,” Losey said.
“All round Liquid Therapy engages with kids and allows them to feel confident within themselves. There are both physical and social benefits for the kids.
“And there’s a massive benefit for families too, it allows them to go to the beach with kids who are well used to the area and they know it won’t be difficult to keep an eye on them,” he added.
Losey said that one of his proudest achievements to date with Liquid Therapy is the fact that it helps families going to the beach no longer having to feel like it’s a chore.
“When we look at ourselves we all love the ability to go to the beach and enjoy ourselves.
“Tennis, football, GAA, and many other sports usually put pressure on kids to score a goal or make a big impact. With Liquid Therapy we give children the chance to win at their own level,” he said.
Losey went on to add that Liquid Therapy is specifically a non-profit organisation and that fundraisers like the one taking place in Errigal on May 27th make it all possible.
Families who have benefitted from Liquid Therapy will be aiming to give back and support future plans of the charity group this Sunday 27th May.
The ‘Errigal Climb for Autism’ takes place from 10am (registration open 10am-12noon). The cost is €10 per adult, kids go free and all proceeds go to Liquid Therapy. It promises to be a fun day out, with refreshments provided by the Happy Camper.
