Ballybofey-based makeup artist Brenda Doherty has added a major highlight to her year with a victory at the Irish Makeup Awards 2018.
Brenda won ‘Freelance Make Up Artist of the Year Borders’ at Sunday’s inaugural awards at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dublin.
Winning the public vote was a shock for Brenda, but it will come as no surprise to her supportive clients.
Brenda is leading the way as one of Donegal’s best bridal makeup artists and has been enjoying phenomenal success with her new salon in Ballybofey.
Speaking to Donegal Woman the morning after the awards, Brenda said: “Winning was amazing. It was a total shock. I never believed that I would win this one.
“When you put so much effort into your work it’s nice to be recognised.”
Fourteen accolades were handed out at last night’s glamorous event, with several split into local regions to recognise the exceptional of make-up artists from all over the country.
Brenda was joined by all her staff for the memorable occasion, and she is quick to praise her hard-working team.
“There’s nothing you can do without a great team,” said Brenda.
Brenda branched into makeup artistry just five years ago and quickly developed her skills to award-winning standards.
“I began at the North West Regional College in Strabane before I trained with Zoe Clark in Dublin to specialise in Bridal makeup. After that I trained with everybody and anybody, both in the UK and Ireland, to pick up my knowledge.
“I think you can never stop learning. Now I love teaching lessons and masterclasses myself to pass on tips to the general public on how to make the most of yourself,” said Brenda.
Brenda’s makeup skills, along with her 20 years of hairdressing experience, makes her new salon a true hotspot for bridal parties in the North West. With her favourite looks being soft, subtle and natural, Brenda’s work is a popular option for many brides.
Moving her business back into town last year was a big step which allowed Brenda to expand her services and her team. Now, she is working on a big makeover at Dunfril House.
Brenda’s supportive clients also voted en masse to make her the winner of the North West Brides ‘Best Bridal Beauty’ award in May.
“I thought last year was amazing, but this year has been even better,” said Brenda.
Brenda focused her skills on editorial shoots in 2016, working with photographers to focus on getting shoots published in magazines and online bridal sites.
“This year, to be winning awards and opening the new salon, is beyond what I ever thought would happen.”
Congratulations Brenda!
