Met Eireann has issued a five-day Status Yellow snow-ice warning as temperatures plummet this week.

Temperatures are set to dip on Tuesday to bring freezing conditions and wintry weather to the county for the rest of the week.

Snow accumulations are expected in Donegal over the coming days, with widespread frost and ice forecast for nighttime. Temperatures could drop as low as -5C in areas on Wednesday night, according to Met Eireann.

The worst of the snow is due to hit the western and northern counties, with higher accumulations on the hills. Forecasters are warning that a ‘significant spell of sleet/snow’ is a possibility on Thursday.

The Status Yellow alert takes effect across Ireland from 6am on Tuesday 29th January until 6pm on Saturday 2nd February.

Temperatures will fall to -1C on Monday night and Tuesday will begin very cold. Sunny spells and wintry showers are expected in the northwest before a cold night on Tuesday with lows of -3C.

Wednesday will be bitterly cold, sunny and with scattered sleet or snow showers. Severe frost and icy patches are forecast for Wednesday night.

Further outbreaks of frost, ice, rain, sleet and snow are forecast for the remainder of the week. Met Eireann has also warned that a very cold and wintry weekend is in store.
