Rushe Fitness owner Emmet shares how we can apply Lady Gaga's attitude to naysayers as motivation for health and fitness goals.

Throughout your life, you will meet people who will lift you up and support you.

But, you will also meet others who will be naysayers and will try to put you down.

How you react to the naysayers will make a huge difference to your goals and your life in general.

After her Oscar win, a quote from Lady Gaga was circulated around social media and it had a powerful message in it.

“I had a boyfriend who told me I’d never succeed, never be nominated for a Grammy, never have a hit song and that he hoped I’d fail,” said Gaga.

“I said to him, ‘Someday, when we’re not together, you won’t be able to order a cup of coffee at the f—ing deli without hearing or seeing me.”

  • She could have easily shied away from what she wanted to do.
  • She could have listened to her then boyfriend.
  • She could have believed him and gave up.
  • She could have used what he said to her as an excuse to stop whenever things inevitably got tough.

But she didn’t.

Instead, she used what he said as a source of motivation, rather a reason to de-motivate herself.

When you set out to achieve anything, weight loss, change of career, running a marathon, whatever it is, you will always have people who will;

  • Question why you are doing it
  • Tell you, you can’t do it
  • Tell you, you should stop
  • Tell you, you definitely should stop if you have a setback
  • Try to deter you because your success is making them uncomfortable.

The main thing you need to do here is smile politely and go and do it anyway.

Use what they say as motivation to spur you on and drive you forward with your goals.

Always remember that things will never be plain sailing, they never are in any goal.

But, as Lady Gaga said in her Oscar speech:

“If you are at home and sitting on your couch and you are watching this right now, all I have to say is this is hard work. I have worked hard for a long time, and it’s not about – you know – it’s not about winning, but – what it’s about is not giving up. If you have a dream, fight for it. There’s a discipline for passion, and it’s not about how many times you get rejected or you fall down or beaten up, it’s about how many times you stand up and are brave and you keep on going.” – Lady Gaga

With 9 Grammys, 3 Brit awards, 1 Academy Award, hundreds of worldwide nominations and award wins, I think it’s fair to say that she has achieved exactly what she said she would to her ex boyfriend.

The best part about the quote about the ex boyfriend, is that the quote is from an interview in @cosmopolitan back in February 2010.

Success may not come overnight.

But once you accept and recognise that the path to success is paved with;

  • Set Backs
  • Hard work
  • Consistency
  • And determination

It makes it easier to keep going when the naysayers try to put you off.
