Review: Summer occasion style at Patrick Gildea Hairdressing

DW editor Rachel gets a summer hair and makeup look at Patrick Gildea Hairdressing Letterkenny.

Tis the season for summer weddings, events and the races. You’ve got the invite, you’ve got the dress, but we know that getting the hair and makeup right can be tricky. When you have an all-day occasion, the best option is to leave it to the pros!

Patrick Gildea Hairdressing has nailed it when it comes to special occasion preparations – you can now get hair, nails, makeup, waxing and tanning done all under one roof.

I visited the Letterkenny salon last Saturday before the No Barriers charity ball in Castle Grove Country House. It was a black-tie summer ball that called for an updo and makeup that lasted all day and night.

The first step was makeup with Arlene Cassidy in the Allure Beauty Room. Arlene and I decided to go for a soft pink-toned look because I would be wearing a bright floral Herysa dress from McElhinneys that was already packed with colour.

What I love about Allure is the top quality brands they use, such as Giorgio Armani, Urban Decay, MAC and Charlotte Tilbury. Arlene combined MAC and Urban Decay foundation to get the best of both for my skin and all the matte eyeshadow colours were MAC. I love the bright-eyed look that Arlene created with MAC concealer under my eyes.

I felt very in control of the level of blush, bronzing and depth of makeup, as Arlene always asked about my own preferences as she built up the colours. I decided to add a bit of lip gloss myself just before the ball.

Once the makeup was done and set, I went out to the main salon floor for an updo with Florrie. I had just one photo saved of a look that I liked. Florrie, who is an incredibly skilled and creative hairdresser, was able to recreate the plaited style perfectly.

I could never have been able to get such a smooth look myself without Florrie’s skills and all the premium holding products she used.

I was delighted with the finished look, it was fresh, casual and chic and lasted all day – from the DEFINE Donegal showcase to the fantastic No Barriers fundraiser.
