A new Donegal brand is putting a twist on tradition by updating the classic Aran knit.
Moss + Cable, founded by Bruckless native Siobhan Mc Kenna, focuses on sustainable production practices and contemporary design.
Siobhan drew on her experience in the fashion industry in London, buying for stores like Harrods and Liberty, as she established the brand in 2020.
Siobhan saw a shift in people’s shopping habits after the onset of the pandemic, as more shoppers seek longer lasting and ethically sourced clothing.
Moss + Cable – the named of the stitches used – is inspired by knitwear made by Siobhan’s mother from many years ago that she still wears and loves to this day.
Siobhan has always been fascinated by the heritage of the Aran sweater and how this style is consistently referenced by different fashion designers the world over.
The traditional Aran knit has had renewed international interest thanks in part to Taylor Swift’s latest album Folklore.
Moss + Cable’s unisex collection is created by skilled manufacturers in South West Donegal, who use a mix of handloom and machine knit methods and source yarn from just one mile away.
Siobhan felt that it was important to keep this industry alive in Ireland and particularly in Donegal, which is so renowned for its yarn production.
“It was important to me that all manufacturing takes place here and the yarn is also supplied locally, so that we are truly a Donegal business,” says Siobhan.
