Want to start a positive new habit? Gym owner Emmet Rushe has five simple steps to set you on the path to success.
Building new habits into your daily routine is a great way to help you to get success with your goals.
It can take anywhere between 14-28 days for something that is done daily to become a habit.
If you have found it difficult to stick to new things in your routine when it comes to your training or diet, there can be two reasons for this.
- You are trying to do too much at once.
- You haven’t given it long enough before stopping.
Trying to change everything at once usually feed into the reason that people tend to stop before you get started.
You get around 2 weeks into your new goals and are met with overwhelm and you need to take a step back as you realise you have done too much too soon.
But, instead of stopping, you just need to reassess your goals and plan out an easier path.
That way, once you have mastered one habit, you can easily add another alongside it and slowly build them up over weeks and months, rather than trying to do everything in the first 2 weeks of starting.
Here are Steps to Success to set you up for getting back into routine again.
Pick one that resonates most with you and start with that, and when you can successfully do it daily without thinking about it, add another.
- Be Grateful
We tend to focus more on the things that go wrong more than the things that go right for us.
Instead, try writing all the good things you have in your life in a Gratitude journal each morning or evening. It keeps your mind focused on the positive things and will stop you focusing on any negative things. It will also allow you to either start or end your day on a positive note and can make a huge difference to your daily attitude and demeanour. - Move your Body Every Day.
Daily exercise helps with your health, your mental health, focus and clarity.
So, make sure you get some sort of daily exercise in, even if you can’t make it to the gym. Even going for a walk is enough to keep your body and mind healthy and allow you to keep your health routine going strong. - Plan Your Day the Night Before
If you plan out what you have to do the night before, you will have a head start on everything you need to do to have a successful day.
It only takes a few minutes to do, and it can make all the difference.
Like having your gym bag packed and ready to go, so you are ready to train when the time comes. Or prepping your food so you have healthy option on hand and don’t end up picking on junk food. - Create A Morning Routine
If you have important tasks to do in the morning, try getting up an hour earlier to give yourself some time to do them before everyone else wakes up.
Our early morning gym goers use the morning classes for this purpose. They manage to get their workouts in and get home before anyone has woken up.
This leaves them free for the rest of the day. - Take Some Time to Quiet your mind.
5-10 minutes of quiet time can make a huge difference in calming the mind.
You can add this in whenever you can, but first thing in the morning or last thing at night is a great way to get you mind focused and away from the distractions of phones, computers and emails that tend to fill our days and keep us constantly distracted.
There you have it, 5 steps to Success that you can use to keep yourself focused and motivated towards having a better week.
Again, pick the one that resonates most with you and start with that, and when you can successfully do it daily without thinking about it, add another.
You will find that you can change your entire routine and life by drip feeding in better habits that will last.
