A Vintage Fashion Show and Afternoon Tea held in Drimarone this month has been a resounding success, raising an impressive €12,400 for the Loreto Girls School in Rumbek, South Sudan.

The stylish fundraiser at the Bluestack Centre & Hostel on 13th July was incredibly well-supported by the local community, with a fantastic turnout and a wonderful atmosphere.

The event served as both a fundraiser and a heartfelt tribute to the work of Mountcharles native, Mary Ellen McGroarty, the UN Director for South Sudan’s food programme.

McGroarty, who holds an Irish Presidential Distinguished Service Award for her outstanding humanitarian work, has dedicated her career to aiding conflict-affected countries across the globe, including Afghanistan, Rwanda, and Uganda.

“We say in South Sudan that if you educate a girl, you can educate a nation,” said McGroarty.

She has emphasized the critical role of World Food Programme School Meals in keeping children, especially girls, in education. “Enticing and keeping children in the classroom is just the first part of the challenge but one that free daily meals are able to address. And that really is the power of food.”

A cheque presentation took place on Thursday at the Bluestack Centre, attended by Rosemary Ward, Manager of the Bluestack Centre, participants from a Failte Ireland Photography course, and 24 children from the Centre’s Summer Camp.

The funds raised will go directly to supporting the Loreto Girls School, making a significant impact on the lives of young girls in South Sudan.
