‘It’s like going to stay with family’ – An inspirational Donegal woman has earned national recognition for her Airbnb after just one year in business.
Deirdre McBride’s Duffy Lodge in Creeslough has earned a special place in the hearts of many guests. And it’s all down to the facilities and thoughtful care given by their host.
A native of Kilmacrennan, Deirdre renovated a former garage on her home farm into an accessible apartment for families and their pets to have quality time together.
The lodge has become popular with families who have children with disabilities and autism as it offers a safe space and tranquillity with views of majestic Muckish.
The lodge has a large disabled bathroom and bedroom, wheelchair-accessible doors, and a huge enclosed backyard play area.

There is plenty of space for pets to play elsewhere or with the friendly resident dog Snowy!
Deirdre and her daughter Mary Kate recently picked up the award for Pet Friendly Holiday Accommodation of the Year at the Local Pet Awards. They earned a standing ovation and were hailed as worthy winners.
Shortly afterwards, they received their fifth Superhost accolade from Airbnb.

The recognition is a boost for Deirdre as she prides herself on making every guest feel at home.
She also cares for her mother and runs her late husband’s farm.
John McBride tragically died in a tree-cutting accident in 2019. He was a very popular man who worked with the environment section of Donegal County Council.
Deirdre and Mary Kate continue to do John proud with the farm work alongside running the Airbnb.
Deirdre said: “I feel good about all we are doing. John was proud of his farm and a few weeks ago a friend said to me: ‘If John was back for one day, he would leave happy’.”

Deirdre’s warm welcome has been a highlight for her Airbnb guests. From the freshly-baked scones to driving them to dinner reservations in the town, she goes above and beyond to make every stay special.
“It’s a place that is loved,” Deirdre said. “I love doing what I am doing.”
The lodge is named after the original owners of the farm, the Duffys, whose ancestors still come to see the house and yard.

Deirdre designed the lodge herself and put the needs of families into every detail. There are wireless headphones for people with autism, the house is clear of clutter for children and waggy tails and there is ample linen provided.

Guest reviews consistently praise the homely feeling of Duffy Lodge. The lodge is already decorated for Halloween and there’ll be traditional barm brack for guests this season.
